Cosmetic dermatology is a field that some dermatologists specialize in.  Many cosmetic surgeons are also skin MD, although the specialisation is found in other fields of medicine including dentistry.  Here’s a look at some of the most common elective procedures performed today.

Face Lifts

Face lifts used to be more popular than they are today .  Other procedures are less pricey , less invasive and may be equally as effective.  However, it is the only procedure that can remove wrinkles from all facial areas .  The price of face lifts in the US range from $7,000 to $15,000 or more.

Injections

Botox and collagen injections are frequent choices for eliminating wrinkles on specific areas of the face.  The areas of the face usually targeted include the area beneath the eyes, at the corners of the mouth and from the mouth to the nose .  Injections can cost anywhere from $400 to $1000 per treatment.

The treatments don’t last as long as a face lift, but the low cost attracts many people .  The procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, usually in a spa-like facility or by a skin MD.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are used to exfoliate the outermost layer of dead skin cells.  Eventually , the outer layer will peel off , revealing smoother more youthful looking skin.  The treatment is also used to even out skin tone, eliminate age spots, bring down fine lines or improve acne.

Several different types of chemical peels that are used by dermatologists .  The least irritating is composed of alpha hydroxy acids.  They are naturally occurring acids found in citrus fruit.

Beta hydroxy acids are even less irritating than alpha hydroxy acids, but have an increased ability to get deeper into the pore.  This is especially helpful for acne where dead skin cells within the pore cause inflammation that leads to pimples.  Salicylic acid is one of the beta hydroxy acids.  It is found in common aspirin.

Retinoic acid peels are stronger than alpha and beta hydroxy acids.  They peel more layers of skin that is beneficial for some deep wrinkles and reducing scars .  Recuperation time for this type of peel is longer .

The costs of chemical peels vary depending on which type of solution is used, but are relatively inexpensive cosmetic procedures.  Consult your local dermatologist or visit Skin MD Blog for more information.
